The 6.5mm Creedmoor Rifle Round
The 6.5mm Creedmoor Rifle Round
The 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle round has grown in popularity over the last several years thanks to its long-range accuracy and minimal recoil.
The 6.5mm Creedmoor Rifle Round. If you are a shooter and spend any significant time at the range, you must have seen the influx of the 6.5 Creedmoor rifles lining up on the shooting benches. So what is the big deal with this new round and why is it taking the country by storm? Well, first of all, calling it new would be inaccurate. While the 6.5 Creedmoor has really only gained significant popularity among vast numbers of shooters within the last two years, this cartridge was launched 10 years ago. The brainchild of the engineers at Hornady, it was designed as a long-range competition load and named after the historic Creedmoor range, the location of the first national rifle matches in Long Island, New York.
6.5mm Creedmoor Rifle Round vs 300 Win. Mag.
The big deal with the 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle round is that it is capable of generating velocities and a trajectory approaching the 300 Winchester Magnum (based on the heavier bullets in the 300 Win Mag and the lighter bullets in the 6.5) at significantly reduced recoil. Not only does this make it a great precision long range competitive round, but it also makes it an excellent choice for hunting.
When compared with the popular .308 Winchester the recoil is reduced, making a long day at the range much more pleasurable. Many people feel that the 6.5mm projectile provides the best aerodynamic ballistic profile of any diameter bullet designed today, resulting in high ballistic coefficients (BC) and superior long range results as well as reduced wind deflection. Since it has an overall length of 2.825 inches it can be chambered in short action rifles and AR 10 platforms alike.
The first production rifle manufacturer to introduce a model chambered in the 6.5 Creedmoor rifle round was DPMS based on the AR 10 platform. Ruger followed shortly thereafter with the M77 bolt rifle. Today, there are numerous production rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. Countless custom gun makers are building them as well, providing a multitude of options.
Riflescope Pairings Creedmoor Rifle Rifle Round
Let’s face it, the best ballistic cartridge is only as good as the ability to aim it. That’s why we feel the TORIC riflescope is a great solution to help enhance the performance of the 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle round. Offered in 3-15×42 and 3-15×50 configurations with either a T-PLEX or Impact BDC reticle, the SCHOTT HT (High Transmission) Glass and ED (Extra low Dispersion) lens provides bright clear images, especially in low light at the higher magnifications. Hand turn, tool-less reset to zero as well as an included high profile turret kit (with zero stop and lock) and locking side focus parallax adjustment take the mechanics of these scopes to another level.
