HISTORICAL Deer hunting Sépaq Anticosti

3,500 years ago, the island was frequented by Amerindians, who gave it the name Notiskuan, a term meaning “place where bears are hunted” and the origin of today’s toponym, Anticosti. Since the 16th century, Anticosti Island has been associated with a number of historical figures. Jacques Cartier, the first explorer to discover the island, named it “Assomption” in honor of the feast day on August 15, 1534. Around 1680, the island was established as a fief and seigneury and given as a reward to Louis Jolliet, a great explorer of the time. However, it was the Frenchman Henri Menier who had the most profound impact on the destiny of Anticosti Island. Around 1895, he purchased the island for the purpose of hunting and fishing. fishing. Several important developments have taken place under his tutelage. In fact, it’s thanks to this wealthy “chocolatier” that we have a large population of white-tailed deer. Menier introduced 220 deer in 1896 and 1897. The deer population is now the highest concentration in eastern North America. As part of his legacy, this picturesque character also left his name to Anticosti’s only village, Port-Menier, located on the west side of the island, after which the island underwent moderate development. In 1967, it became the property of a forestry company, Consolidated Bathurst, which, while exploiting the forest’s resources, did not significantly develop the community structure. In 1974, the Quebec government acquired the island and proceeded to divide up the territory. Ten years later, management of most of the territory has been entrusted to Sépaq. In addition to offering quality hunting and fishing activities, Sépaq has also developed resort tourism during the summer season.StatusToday, some 240 people live permanently on Anticosti Island. They are concentrated in the island’s only urban center, the village of Port-Menier. In 1982, the government began the process of transferring residential and commercial properties to these residents, as well as municipalizing the island. It was also in these years that the island’s inhabitants became users of a portion of the territory reserved for them to hunt.#deer#moose#hunting adventure#katenadeau#moose hunting#how to bag a moose#how to bag a deer
