4K – Moose – Turn it up!
– Maternal refusal
We filmed this female with her two calves (fawns) for 48 hours.
It was interesting to observe the number of times the mother systematically refused to drink in front of our cameras.
Considering that fawns are generally born in late May/early June and should drink for about 3-4 months (Wildlife Biology, V. 8, N. 2, “Lactation and Growth in Moose”), we should possibly capture some suckling in July.
Although this female is not aware of being filmed, one cause could be stress generated by unnatural elements in her environment, such as salt blocks, cameras, human odors… Have a nice day! Less than a month!
