Anticosti Island inhabits the imagination of many adventure-seeking travelers.
With its breathtaking scenery, renowned hunting and fishing grounds, and mysterious past as a shipwreck island, Anticosti is a fascinating place that beckons adventure and discovery. 222 km long, Anticosti Island is Quebec’s largest natural island. It faces the village of Havre-Saint-Pierre on the St. Lawrence River.
A natural paradise
A true natural paradise, the island is home to over 37,000 white-tailed deer, some 220 species of birds and rare and sometimes unique plants. The island’s limestone geology not only provides spectacular scenery and canyons, but also makes it a witness to the past. The only inhabited village on the island, Port-Menier owes its name to the French chocolatier and industrialist Henri Menier. He acquired the island and developed it from 1895 to 1926. Today, Port-Menier is home to some 175 residents, who welcome many tourists every year to experience the sweet adventure of Anticosti Island.
