Bear hunting: how to improve your chances

Bear hunting in the Upper Laurentians begins in mid-May. A period when bears emerge from hibernation, hungry and emaciated. With the right techniques and a little patience, the success of your bear harvest is very high!

Choosing a baiting site for bear hunting

Choosing the right bait site is essential. With its super sense of smell, the bear can smell your site from up to 10 km away. The top of a mountain or cliff should therefore be favored over the bottom of a valley, where odors travel less well.

If you choose the top of a mountain, opt for a forest with lots of deciduous trees, as the bear will seek shade when moving around. That way you increase your chances!

A scent bomb to attract animals

A scent bomb to create a wow effect with bears will help you attract them to your site. You can make a scent bomb by filling a bucket, barrel or jute bag with fish, and punching a few holes in the top to let the scent escape. We tie it securely to a tree, so that the bears can’t knock it over. You can also buy them in many specialized stores, as well as various bear-hunting products. And don’t hesitate to place several of them on your site!

The right distance for the right grip

Ideally, baiting should be set up 20 meters from your stand for bow or crossbow hunting, and 50 meters when hunting with a firearm.

Outfitter hunting

Hunting at an outfitter has its advantages: a regularly baited site with quality bait; comfortable stands in prime locations; wildlife management that allows for a very present bear population; a considerable increase in the chances of harvesting your beast. What’s more, the experienced bear-hunting guides you’ll find at an outfitter are well versed in the tricks of the trade, and you’ll have the opportunity to share yours, too!

Although bear hunting is open from May 15 to June 30, the best time is from June 8 onwards, when bears are in rut and a little less cautious.
