Berkley Gulp PowerBait – Using soft lures

Martin Bourget and Raynald Dancause talk about using soft lures for fishing. Berkley, Gulp, PowerBait, Atomic Teaser, Power Nymph, Gulp Alive Minnow and many other products from the Berkley range.

GORGEE! AND POWERBAIT UNPLUGGED

While Gulp ! ® and Gulp! Gulp! and Vivant! became overnight sensations, the development of both products was anything but quick. For over 20 years, Gulp! technology has existed in the testing labs at Berkley ® Spirit Lake, Iowa. Berkley chemist John Prochnow and I spent two decades perfecting the baits, waiting for them to meet our rigorous standards before releasing them.

Long known as a company rooted in technology and constant product innovation, Berkley previously revolutionized the soft bait market with the development of PowerBait ®. But now, as coastal saltwater, coldwater and bass markets embrace Gulp! many are asking what Gulp! is, what makes it so effective and what makes it different from PowerBait.

Standard soft plastic baits (worms, lizards, crabs, etc.) are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the same material used to manufacture pipes and other items. To make PVC soft plastic bait, the material must be heated and combined with an oil-based resin. The more oil-based resin you add to the PVC, the softer the bait will be. That’s how Berkley PowerBait is made.

Gorgée! is made from water-based resins, hence the main difference between the two baits. This allows for a much more olfactory diffusion than with oil-based resins. Because oil and water don’t mix, when perfume is added to a bait created from PVC and an oil-based resin, the oil literally traps the scent inside the bait. Although some of the odor escapes, the oil actually acts as a barrier. However, anglers know that when fish bite PowerBait, they hold on much longer than with other baits. When the fish bites the bait, it releases a scent that makes it think it’s actually food. This results in more positive sets of square brackets.

We always tell people to throw a PowerBait worm until it falls off the hook. Once this bait is chewed and mutilated, that’s when the scent will escape the most.

Gulp! on the other hand, disperses fragrance as soon as it touches water, because there’s no oil barrier to keep water out. This allows the bait to disperse an abundance of scent, widening the strike zone by attracting fish that don’t see the bait. When fishing with Gulp! it’s important to fish the bait slowly and let it do what it’s supposed to do: disperse the scent.

Honestly, you can use just one Gulp! bait all day and it’s still going to emit more odor at the end of the day than anything else. That’s why Gulp! Vivant! is so effective. If you use a bait for an hour or so, you can simply put it back in the juice, and after 15 minutes, the bait will be as good as new. It’s the equivalent of taking a dead minnow and bringing it back to life.

It’s my base camp, all the information on what I’m doing or planning to do, my Facebook live streams, it’s THE place you don’t want to miss. What’s more, I add little bonuses from time to time.
