The bloodhound

The bloodhound is a dog trained to track wounded big game. It is specialized in tracking game with the scent of a wound, whether bloody or not, day or night, up to 48 hours after the hunter’s last shot. The bloodhound is used during the big game hunting season (moose, white-tailed deer and bear) to locate and/or retrieve a specific game animal that has been hit by a projectile and cannot be found by the hunter.

Dog breed

Although no breed of dog is necessarily recommended, it goes without saying that breeds with hunting aptitudes are recommended. So any good hunting dog can become a bloodhound. But be careful! To become excellent, they must demonstrate certain very specific qualities and aptitudes to do their job properly and achieve the desired results. Among other things, they need to be calm and well-balanced, have good physical stamina and a “good nose”, and be interested in this type of work, which is all about tracking.

Bloodhound handler

What sets the bloodhound apart in particular is that it is of no use if it is not closely followed by a bloodhound handler with whom it forms a team. While the dog’s mission is to sniff out the trajectory taken by the wounded game while pointing out the signs of injury visible to his master(blood, etc.), the dog’s mission is to detect the wounded game.In other words, it’s the driver’s job to analyze and determine where the hunter has hit the game (belly, lung, heart, etc.). For the hundreds of thousands of hunters who criss-cross Quebec’s forests, the team formed by handler and dog is of the utmost importance during hunting season. Over 100 handlers are available throughout the province, proudly partnering with the Association des conducteurs de chiens de sang du Québec (ACCSQ) to offer their services. Doing business with an ACCSQ driver means receiving professional service from passionate people trained to find your game.
