Clay Hayes Hunter Bamboo Back Longbow Construction – Complete GuideThis week, we’re building a deflex/reflex osage bamboo longbow. For this bow, you’ll need some kind of belly material. Ipe and osage are both popular. In this bow-building video, we’ll use osage for the belly. You’ll also need a piece of bamboo. I bought mine from 3RiversArchery.com. We’ll start by using a Z-splice to join two osage laths. Once the laths have been assembled, we trace the profile of the longbow and pre-tailor them. Then we’ll do the same with the bamboo stand. Pre-tilling the belly and back lamellae will make the tiller process much easier. Once the pieces have been tiled, it’s time to glue them. We’ll be using a two-component epoxy resin, EA-40, to make these long, curved natural laminated bows, which are an excellent way to learn how to build primitive, traditional bows. While not what I’d call a primitive bow, they’re made from natural materials and are something you can make at home with a minimum of tools and woodworking experience. We hunt and fish because we love it, but it’s also how we get most of our meat. Hunting is our way of life. We also cultivate a large garden on our Idaho property. This, combined with hunting, fishing and gathering, is how we obtain most of our food.
