Clay Hayes Hunter Building a Snakey Osage Orange SelfBow – from start to finishThis week, we’re back with another traditional bow building video, building a Snakey Osage Orange Selfbow from start to finish. We’ll start with a ripe osage stave and use a paring knife to remove the bark. Then we chase a ring to bring the bow down to a single growth ring. I use a very basic bow-building tool kit for this job – essentially, a draw knife and a farrier’s rasp. I’ll show you how to lay the bow, draw the limb profile, roughen the bow and make the final cut. When we’re done, I’ll strap on a quiver, load it with arrows and head out to the pasture to shoot some arrows. This longbow has slightly mirrored tips, but you could use the same hot-bending techniques to make a recurve bow if you wish. This is essentially an ASMR video, but you should be able to understand what’s going on if you want to use it as a guide to building your own osage longbow.
