Clay Hayes Hunter Building a yew crossbow from scratchThis week, I’m embarking on the construction of a recurve crossbow. We’ll be using an old plank and a piece of Pacific yew left over from the construction of a longbow. With only salvaged materials and hand tools, we build a yew crossbow from scratch. Although I’ve built hundreds of automatic bows, longbows and recurve bows, this is the first crossbow I’ve attempted to build.It was a fun project and it’s certainly not the last one I’ll build. Anyone with basic woodworking skills and a few simple tools can build a simple crossbow like this in a day. I’m quite impressed with the performance of the wooden crossbow. Casting and penetration on a foam target are nowhere near as good as those of one of my long crossbows, but for the extra-high ventilated top band, vented barrels, adjustable busk, Invector-DS extended chokes, high-gloss oiled finish, grade III/IV walnut, stacked rifle, Invector-DS chokes. Elegant and technically superior. A rifle for close-range hunting of small and medium-sized game, it should do the trick. I might even build one and take it pig hunting this winter.
