Clay Hayes Hunter Can a recurve bow beat a compound bow?

Can a recurve bow beat a compound bow in a shooting contest? It depends! The precision of a well-tuned compound bow in the hands of an experienced shooter is indisputable. But in certain situations, a recurve or longbow can achieve a shot that compound bows simply aren’t capable of. In this video, Clay Hayes shows how to use the versatility of a traditional bow and a few shots to beat a compound bow with a recurve bow in a shooting contest. But first, you have to play a little trick on your compound archer friend!

Compound bows tend to shoot very fast and have flatter trajectories. Recurve and longbows tend to shoot much more slowly, and the arc of the arrows is much more pronounced. We can use this trajectory to shoot over an object standing between us and our target. In this situation, the faster-pulling compound bow would not be able to get over the obstacle.

The next shot requires us to shoot with our bow horizontal to the ground. With most compound bows, this shot would be difficult, simply because the arrow would fall from the arrow rest when the bow is too inclined.

Of course, this is a game, not a fair competition. But it’s still fun to get your compound archery candidates involved in a contest like this and watch them squirm when they realize they just can’t make the shots!
