Clay Hayes Hunter How to build a primitive cedar survival bow with sinew
After forging a tomahawk and bow knife, Clay Hayes uses primitive tools to make an Eastern Red Cedar survival bow using sinew from a freshly cut tree. This video covers the entire process of making a primitive bow. Clay begins by roughing out the longbow from a green bow stave, before supporting the bow with sinew and fin after the sinew has dried.Eastern red cedar is a member of the juniper family and is widespread in the East and Midwest. It is replaced by other closely related species, common juniper, rocky mountain juniper and a few others as we move into the western states. All these species make excellent primitive bows if reinforced with other materials such as rawhide or sinew. The availability of this bow wood, the fact that it can be worked easily with hand tools and that it dries very quickly, make it an excellent choice for the rapid manufacture of a wooden bow or a survival bow.The addition of sinew helps to protect the back of the bow and considerably improve bow performance. As it dries, the sinew retracts longitudinally, often drawing the bow into a reflex or backset. This allows the limbs to be preloaded at the time of cocking, resulting in a more efficient and often faster bow. video is the third in a series that follows Clay through the process of making a primitive bow. He begins by using a charcoal forge to make a tomahawk and a knife from old rasps, then uses these tools to make the primitive bow and arrows. The next video in this series will deal with the making of primitive arrows from old rasps. cane and hand-forged arrowheads (primitive arrowheads). When the primitive hunting equipment is complete, Clay will be hunting wild hogs with a bow and arrow.Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel. We make the best traditional archery, bow making, recurve hunting, craftsmanship and survival videos on the web. Join Clay, Liz and the kids on their outdoor adventures, from bowhunting deer and elk in the mountains of Idaho to hunting wild hogs in Florida, and practicing crafts and survival skills. We hunt and fish because we love it, but it’s also how we get most of our meat. Hunting is our way of life. We also cultivate a large garden on our Idaho property. This, combined with hunting, fishing and gathering, is how we obtain most of our food.
