To make leather, rawhide, buckskin or prepare a hide for taxidermy, the hide must first be skinned. This video shows how to skin a deer hide to remove all the meat, fat and membrane in preparation for tanning.

This simple procedure is valid for deer, raccoons and other fur-bearing animals, squirrels, etc. This is the first stage in the tanning of animal hides. In the next few videos, we’ll look at how rawhide is made, how a hide is tanned with hair, vegetable tanning and other hide tanning methods.

Hide tanning is a fun way to use more of the animals we harvest, as well as advancing your primitive skills, family farming, crafting, survival and self-sufficiency skills.
