One of the things I love most about primitive bows and bow building is the seemingly endless variations on this simple and effective primitive weapon. Primitive cultures the world over designed bows and arrows adapted to the materials and requirements of their regions. In parts of the world where “good” bow wood is hard to come by, the Penobscot bow design enables us to build high-performance primitive bows capable of taking down big game like deer or elk. The design of the Penobscot bow is essentially a variation on the cable-backed bow used by many primitive peoples in the Far North, where it is difficult to find quality wood for bows. What’s more, many wood species can be dried and fire-hardened to produce even better archery equipment in a very short time, which is exactly what you need for the ideal survival bow. It’s also an excellent advanced survival or bushcraft project! If you like video games, you may have seen a similar arc in Far Cry Primal, the double arc.
