Clay Hayes Hunter Traditional bow hunting with a primitive bow – Part 1
For many western hunters, September is a special time. It marks the start of a new hunting season and another opportunity to fill the freezer with organic, free-range wild meat… and the elk rut!
With heavy hunting pressure, wolves, hot weather and a general lack of rutting activity, this season proved to be a difficult one.
Traditional bowhunting for elk, especially with a primitive bow, is a low-chance game. But what it lacks in efficiency, it more than makes up for in romanticism, simplicity and aesthetics.
Even with the short distances this type of bowhunting requires, persistence can often pay off. This year, we used all the techniques of ground hunting, from scouting to approaching to ambushing, and we called elk. The males never started rutting hard and with few buglings, we ended up relying more on ambush in the end.
Follow Clay Hayes throughout his 2018 archery elk hunting season, as he tests his technique against backcountry elk and attempts to bring home a bull elk with his Osage hand bow and bamboo arrows.
Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel. Every week we upload a new video on one of the following topics: bowhunting, bowmaking, survival techniques, bushcraft, self-reliance, primitive techniques, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, primitive technology, and much more!

We make the best traditional archery, bow making, recurve hunting, craftsmanship and survival videos on the web.
Join Clay, Liz and the kids on their outdoor adventures, from bowhunting deer and elk in the mountains of Idaho to hunting wild hogs in Florida, and practicing crafts and survival skills. We hunt and fish because we love it, but it’s also how we get most of our meat.
Hunting is our way of life. We also cultivate a large garden on our Idaho property. This, combined with hunting, fishing and gathering, is how we obtain most of our food.
