If you’re like me, your optics are frequently exposed to dirt, dust, rain and snow. Regular lens cleaning is therefore essential. Whether scopes, rangefinders, telescopes or binoculars, all optics require regular maintenance to prevent scratches and ensure their smooth operation. Here’s the best way to get the job done.#COATING CONSIDERATIONS #1Most optics come with some type of protective coating, some better than others. In general, you get what you pay for. The type of coating determines what you can and cannot use to clean the lens. You can use acetone on some high-end optics, for example, but make sure it doesn’t come into contact with rubber or plastic components. Although acetone is an exceptional cleaning agent, I don’t recommend it for most low- to mid-range optics. It’s best to ask manufacturers which cleaning solutions they recommend.#2 TOOLS CLEANINGUn kit commercial lens cleaning system (above) usually includes a cleaning solution, a fine lens brush, pre-moistened tissues for lens cleaning, a microfiber cleaning cloth and sometimes a fan. Some kits also include a dual-purpose cleaning pen, with a fine brush at one end and a cleaning pad at the other, to rub directly onto the lens. Clean water is undoubtedly the best – and most universally available – solution for cleaning lenses. Some optics are waterproof, so you can soak them completely; I regularly rinse my Swarovski optics in the shower, for example. It’s best to let your optics air, but wiping them with a microfiber cloth is the next best option.#3. CLEANING PROCESSWhat Whatever type of lens you’re cleaning, start by gently blowing away dust, dirt or grit with compressed air, then remove any remaining debris with the lens brush. Next, carefully fold and dip a small, clean section of your microfiber cloth into a very small amount of your favorite lens cleaning solution. Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion from the center of the lens outwards. Finish with another blast of compressed air to remove any residual dust.#4 PROTECTIVE MEASURESThe best way to avoid wear and tear on your optics is to minimize their exposure to the elements. Most hunters today use a bino harness, for example, which is essentially a protective case with shoulder straps to keep your binoculars secured to your chest. Similarly, many hunters use neoprene or other types of covers for their riflescopes and spotting scopes (above). Finally, when you’re not using your optical equipment, never forget to replace the lens covers and store them in their protective cases.Outdoor Canada / https://www.outdoorcanada.ca/4-ways-to-keep-your-hunting-optics-clean-and-at-the-ready/
