Description L’Isle-aux-Grues
Isle-aux-Grues lies in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Montmagny. It is an integral part of the Isle-aux-Grues archipelago, which comprises some twenty islands, islets and reefs. However, it is the only island that is permanently inhabited.
It’s a veritable haven of peace, concealing the traditions and know-how of yesteryear. The 150 islanders who live here have managed to preserve the treasures of this past while integrating the latest technologies.
Agriculture remains the main economic driver. Thirty-five years ago, farmers banded together, formed a cooperative and built a cheese factory. Today, S.C.A. de l’Ile-aux-Grues cheeses have earned a solid reputation and have won several prestigious awards.
The tourism industry is booming, thanks in large part to the hospitality of our stakeholders and islanders.
L’Isle-aux-Grues flora and fauna
Isle-aux-Grues abounds in exceptional flora and fauna. More than 210 bird species have been recorded, much to the delight of ornithologists. The natural flats and Pointe-aux-Pins, a wooded area accessible to the general public, are ideal places to admire plants and birds.
Winter is a time of great natural beauty. Whether you’re hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling, our landscapes are always breathtaking.
The seasons and the tides punctuate the life of the islanders. In summer, a Société des traversiers du Québec ferry, the N.M., Grues-des-Iles, managed by the municipality, links the island to Montmagny, with air travel as a complementary mode of transport. In winter, however, the airplane is the only means of transporting islanders, visitors and general cargo.
The tranquility and natural surroundings will certainly charm you and encourage you to return regularly. That’s what we hope with all our hearts!
