Journey to Katmai to meet the brown bear. With a few friends, we set off early one late summer morning to catch a floatplane in Homer, Alaska, and be dropped off at the edge of a remote lake. From here, we travel 5 miles or more along the river system, photographing brown bears. àSockeye salmon are sinking, attracting bears from miles around. As the bears have been feeding for several weeks, they have plenty of time to play and bask between meals. We’ve seen some incredible behavior. We even spent a little time with a sow and her year-old twins (spring cubs), then came across a sow with year-old triplets.It was a particular pleasure for us to see the little ones try their hand at fishing.
