Loons fish underwater. Watching loons in their parenting routine is pretty special, but it’s an added treat when they’re in shallow water, close enough to the kayak to be observed fishing. Loons use only their legs and feet to swim and dive, and not their wings at all. And they’re as fast as lightning in pursuit of fish. These parents have a unique routine: the female very often wants to feed the chick herself, and takes the fish from her mate to offer to the new arrival.
