DISCOVER OUR REGION
Geographically, Matanie straddles the border between the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie regions. Situated between the sea and the mountains, it stretches along more than a hundred kilometers of coastline and covers an area of 3,400 square kilometers. Located just a few dozen kilometers from urban centers and villages, the hinterland offers a vast, wild and easily accessible territory. With a relief marked by numerous peaks approaching 1,000 meters and several large lakes, the Rivière-Bonjour unorganized territory (TNO), of which Réserve faunique de Matane is a part, is home to a rich fauna, especially renowned for the omnipresence of moose.
Rich in diversity, especially for lovers of outdoor activities, but also for those with a passion for history and discovery, the region’s tourism offering promises surprising discoveries.
Le Maquereaux
It’s a fish with a streamlined body. Its back is blue-green with black stripes, while its belly is silvery white. Its two dorsal fins are relatively widely spaced, and it also has 5 or 6 small fins, called pinnae, in front of its caudal fin. Its tail is highly indented. Its scales are embedded in the dermis, giving this good swimmer excellent hydrodynamics. Adults rarely exceed 50 cm in height, averaging 30 to 40 cm and weighing 500 g to 1 kg.
Mackerel is an excellent fish for learning to fish. Indeed, in certain circumstances, schools of mackerel literally pounce on fishing rods equipped with “mitraillettes” (a long series of hooks). This sudden and miraculous catch could be seen on the Dunkirk jetty.
It is caught mainly by waddling, because if a shoal is just below the boat, the catch can come out 5 by 5. Mackerel are most powerful when hooked on small lures. It has a rather mediocre defense.
