WHEN CAN I FISH?
Generally speaking, the Atlantic salmon sport fishing season in Quebec runs from May 15 to September 30*.The sea trout fishing season lasts until October*, with fishing periods varying according to the river.
HOW TO CATCH SALMON?
In most Quebec rivers, only fly fishing is permitted during the salmon fishing season. A single fly Outside the salmon-fishing season, for example during the sea-trout season, two artificial flies with a maximum of three tacks are permitted.
WHY A RIGHT OF ACCESS?
A right of access gives you permission to fish in the targeted area. There are two types of fishing areas on salmon rivers:
- sectors where access is not subject to quotas (non-quota sector), i.e. where there is no daily limit on the number of anglers;
- sectors where access is restricted, with a daily limit on the number of anglers. Fishing rights in this type of sector are allocated by drawing lots.
CAN I KEEP MY PLUGS?
There are limits for fish caught, taken and released:
- size (for example, it is forbidden to keep salmon smaller than 30 cm)
- daily and annual sampling :
- by fishermen
- by river
What’s more, at certain times of year and/or on certain rivers, catch-and-release, also known as salmon graciation, may be mandatory. It is important to always refer to the Ministry’ s website for this information.
