Release TRACT TORIC 30 MM Long-distance shooting The release of the new TRACT TORIC 30 MM. Redefining long rangeThe legend of the Winchester Model 70By Jon AllenFew things in life are truly “iconic”. The most famous rifle from the most famous manufacturer – the Winchester Model 70 – dispels all doubts. The legend of the Winchester Model 70 The Winchester 1873 is without doubt the most famous production rifle of all time. As it reached the twilight of its “career” in the early 20th century, it was quickly replaced by another rifle built to the same quality. The preferred firearm of Carlos Hathcock, the Marines’ greatest marksman, and Jack O’Connor, one of the most famous hunters and outdoor writers of the last 200 years, the Winchester Model 70 lacks neither enthusiasm nor validation.

Origins Long-distance shooting

Like most wars, the First World War precipitated innovation in firearms technology. For the first time, warring nations carried bolt-action rifles onto the battlefield. Impressed by their mass-produced Springfields, soldiers returned home with the intention of discarding their low-velocity lever-action shotguns in favor of bolt-action sporting rifles.Immediately after the war, there were no mass-produced bolt-action shotguns. Springfield surplus rifles were capable of performance. But their bulky stocks and heavy triggers were far from being a showpiece or a pleasure to shoot. Firearms manufacturers rushed to meet the new demand. In 1920, Savage won the race with the 1920 Hi-Power model. Preferring to take his time creating the best new model rather than the first, Winchester refused to join the race. The Model 54 took the market by storm. Fans had been eagerly awaiting Winchester’s response to the lock action request. And the elegant new rifle didn’t disappoint. Although the Model 54 was considered a great success, some design elements, notably the heavy trigger, were improved, and the updated version was given a new name: the Model 70.Many have described the new design as perfect. The improved trigger, combined with the Model 54’s balanced, smooth action, has provided hunters and recreational shooters with a ready-to-use rifle capable of delivering high accuracy on a lightweight platform and in an attractive package. In 1952, Winchester self-proclaimed the Model 70 “the rifle of the rifleman”, and the name stuck.

Changes Long-distance shooting

While the number of orders was never a problem, production efficiency was. Winchester was a company that had built its reputation on the quality and construction of superior firearms through artisanal processes rather than mass production methods. In the early 1960s, less expensive bolt-action weapons began to take market share. The most notable is the Remington 700. Realizing the need to lower its price to be competitive, Winchester made changes to the original Model 70 design in 1964, modifying several of the rifle ‘s components. Metal parts were forged instead of machined by hand. The same applies to the barrel rifling, which was originally hand-drilled. The original extractor has been replaced. And the controlled feed action has also been replaced by a more economical push-feed action. What’s more, the squaring has been machine stamped instead of cut by the hands of skilled craftsmen. These changes have received a mixed reception, with purists complaining of a drop in quality. On the other hand, ordinary people were happy to be able to afford a good rifle at last.

Legacy

Over the years, manufacturing improvements have kept the price down. Contemporary versions offer a variety of styles and calibres. They offer hunters, sport shooters and law enforcement officers a multitude of choices to find the perfect configuration for their intended use.Very few items have remained virtually unchanged over the last 100 years while maintaining market demand. The Model 70 is still considered a market leader in terms of production, build quality, sales and user experience as it approaches its centenary. In 1999, Shooting Times named the Winchester Model 70 the “bolt-action rifle of the century”. As a first-rate weapon in the woods, on the battlefield and on the streets for law enforcement, the Model 70 deserves this title more than ever for its flexibility and consistency. Years after its initial release, we may have forgotten that the Winchester Model 70’s nickname was a clever marketing campaign. But the “Rifleman’s Rifle” will always be remembered as a member of the Bolt Action Hall of Fame.source
