The passenger pigeon was the most abundant bird species on Earth in the 19th century! It was only found here in North America. Its population has been estimated at between three and five billion! This species, Ectopistes migratorius, is now extinct. On September 1, 1914, the last traveling pigeon, a female nicknamed Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. She was 25 years old.
