When horses replace machines

When horses replace machines | Adventure Hunting Fishing Moose Deer Outfitters and the great outdoors

Forester Paul Chaperon is an exception in his forest at Saint-Adrien, in the Eastern Townships. Instead of working with forestry machinery, he uses four horses to carry out his operations.

“First of all, you have to love horses,” exclaims Paul Chaperon when asked about the secret of his technique. He’s been taking horses out every day for 40 years, rain or shine.

During spring, summer and autumn, his four Belgian horses work on his farm, ploughing, sowing and harvesting. In winter, his companions become his partners in the forest.

According to Paul Chaperon, the great advantage of forestry work with horses is that the animals are able to squeeze between the trees without damaging the soil and plants around them. The logger can therefore select the trees to be felled without having to raze his forest to the ground to make way for machinery.

Every winter, Paul Chaperon sells the equivalent of 30 truckloads of wood to nearby sawmills.
