Mountain goats sport a distinctive beard and a thick, long winter coat that protects them from cold temperatures and biting mountain winds, as seen here. A subalpine to alpine species, the Rocky Mountain goat is a confident climber that has nothing to envy the mouflon. Mountain goats are not goats per se, but rather close relatives better known as antelope goats. Their hooves are equipped with two toes that can spread to improve balance and grip on sharp surfaces. The rough pads at the base of each toe offer incredible grip, like a natural climbing shoe.
